I recognize that I am extremely privileged to have access to all of the resources that my high school offers, but there are so many people who aren't as lucky. That is why my friend and I are starting this #WeighItForward project to encourage students like us to weigh their backpacks and donate $1 or even 50 cents for every pound that shows up on the scale. Here's why:
All too often, high school students lug around 15+ pound bags full of notebooks and binders and papers and books. We have so much STUFF. And to us, this stuff is a huge burden, because we have to carry it on our backs from class to class. What we don't recognize as we drag our heavy book bags through the halls is that some students don't even have bags to put their school supplies in. Some don't even have school supplies! While we complain about all of the things we have to carry around, there are impoverished kids and teens with nothing but the will to learn, and some don't even have that.
Through this movement, we want to make it possible for those students to regain their passion for learning by giving them the resources they need to succeed. To do this, I donated $21 (the weight of my backpack, as shown above) to DonorsChoose.org (about).
DonorsChoose is an organization that promotes educators by using donations from people like you and me to buy the teacher's requested items to fulfill the classroom's needs.
I used my $21 to support Ms. Cain from a high poverty school in Dayton, Ohio to buy flash drives and drums for her lesson "Researching Texts Through Songs". I love the idea of this project and I really want to see Ms. Cain's goal come to fruition.
There are so many different projects on this site that you can fund, and a little money goes a long way.
So students- weigh your backpacks like I did, or simply give what you can.
Teachers- please let your students know about this project so we can reach a bigger audience!
Everyone- donate what you can to DonorsChoose.org and spread the word so you can #WeighItForward
If you choose to participate, let me know how much your bag weighed and what project you donated to by using the hashtag #WeighItForward and tagging @godfreycameronm!
